Moments of Meaning III

The Steadiness Beneath the Storm

In my work with clients, I’ve noticed something else worth naming.

Most people don’t need a better plan.

They need a steadier nervous system to carry out the plan they already have.

We talk a great deal about clarity, direction, and purpose. But clarity rarely takes root in a body that’s braced, a mind that’s racing, or a nervous system that’s still bracing for the last storm.

When we’re dysregulated, even the right decision can feel wrong.

When we’re regulated, even an uncertain path can feel walkable.

This is the quiet, often overlooked foundation beneath everything else we build.

Revisiting Inner Regulation

Inner Regulation is one of the four foundations of The SomaNorth Method, and it may be the most misunderstood.

It isn’t about staying calm all the time. It isn’t about suppressing what you feel or performing composure you don’t have.

Inner Regulation is the capacity to return.

To notice when you’ve drifted into fight, flight, freeze, or fawn, and to find your way back to a steadier center, again and again, without judgment for having left it.

This matters because the nervous system doesn’t just respond to our circumstances. It shapes how we interpret them.

A steady body sees possibility. An activated body sees threat.

The same email, the same conversation, the same crossroads can look entirely different depending on the state we meet it in.

This is why regulation comes before clarity, not after it. We cannot think our way into calm. We must feel our way there, and then let clarity follow.

A Gentle Practice to Try

Practice: Finding Your Anchor Point

Find a place where you can sit or stand without needing to be anywhere else for a few minutes.

Notice your feet, or whatever part of you is in contact with the ground.

Take one breath in, and let the exhale be slightly longer than the inhale.

Then ask yourself:

“Where in my body am I holding tension right now?”

Let your attention rest there. Not to fix it. Just to notice it.

Ask a second question:

“What would it feel like to soften, even ten percent?”

You don’t need to reach calm. You only need to move one small degree in that direction.

Notice what shifts when you’re not fighting your own nervous system.

Notice how much more available your thinking becomes.

Notice that regulation isn’t a destination. It’s a practice of returning.

Journal Prompts

What situations tend to pull me out of my center most quickly?

When I’m dysregulated, what stories do I tell myself that I wouldn’t tell myself when I’m calm?

Who or what helps me return to steadiness?

What would it look like to build small moments of regulation into an ordinary day, rather than waiting for a crisis to demand it?

If my nervous system could speak, what might it be asking for right now?

A Blessing for the Path Ahead

May you remember that steadiness is not the absence of struggle.

May you meet your own activation with curiosity instead of criticism.

May you find, again and again, your way back to center.

May your body become a place you trust, not just a place you manage.

And may you discover that regulation is not something you achieve once, but something you practice, gently, for the rest of your life.

Closing Invitation

If you find yourself moving through life at the mercy of your own nervous system, reacting before you’ve had the chance to choose, The SomaNorth was created with you in mind.

You don’t need to master your emotions. You simply need a place to begin returning to yourself.
