The Equinox Threshold: What Does It Mean to Stand in Balance?
Opening Reflection
Each year, there is a moment when day and night are almost equal. It is a brief pause before the darkness starts to grow.
We rarely notice thresholds while we are standing on them. Usually, we only realize a new season has arrived after it is already here, like on the first cold morning or when we see the first bare tree. But the threshold itself, the exact moment of balance, often passes by without us noticing.
The autumn equinox is one of the rare times when the earth shows us this balance. For just one day, light and dark are equal before the balance starts to shift.
Today, we pause at that threshold. Instead of rushing into autumn, we take a moment to notice what it feels like to stand right in the middle.
An Image
I picture an old set of scales with two hanging trays. This scale is not for deciding a winner, but for observing: *here is what is here. Here is what is there. For this moment, they are level.*
Most of us spend our days trying to tip the scale toward more output, more certainty, and more answers. We rarely allow ourselves to notice the balance as it is, without trying to change it.
The equinox does not ask us to fix anything. It asks us to pay attention. For one day, light and dark are not fighting each other. Instead, they exist together in perfect balance.
What would it look like to hold two things in your life the same way? Not trying to solve them or make one win but simply accepting that both are true at the same time.
The Meaning Beneath the Moment
People often think balance means being still, but it does not. The equinox is not a place to rest. It is a moment of movement, caught between two seasons that are both present at once.
This season is for holding paradox gently.
You can be proud of how far you’ve come and still be unfinished.
You can be tired and still be moving toward something worthwhile.
You can grieve a season ending and welcome the one arriving, in the very same breath.
Autumn does not ask us to pick between the fullness of summer and the quiet that is coming. It invites us to hold both, just as the equinox holds equal light and dark, without conflict.
A Gentle Practice to Try
Practice: “Holding the Scale”
1. Settle. Find a comfortable seat. Let your hands rest open, palms up, one on each knee.
2. Name the light. Bring to mind one thing that is going well, one thing you’re grateful for as this season closes.
3. Name the dark. Bring to mind one thing that is difficult, unresolved, or still in shadow.
4. Hold both. Let your two open hands represent each one. Notice that you don’t have to close either hand to hold the other.
5. Rest in the balance. Take three slow breaths here, simply witnessing both as true, without needing to resolve them today.
This practice honors the wisdom of paradox: holding two truths without making one go away.
Journal Prompts
– What feels most “in the light” for me right now?
– What feels most “in the shadow” right now?
– Can I let both be true without rushing to fix or resolve either one?
– What have I been treating as a contradiction that might actually be a balance?
– As the season tips toward darkness, what part of myself is ready to turn inward?
A Blessing for the Path Ahead
May you stand steady on the threshold, unhurried by the turning season.
May you hold your light and your shadow with equal tenderness.
May you trust that balance is not something you achieve once, but something you return to, again and again.
May you carry both what has flourished and what still waits to unfold, gently, in the same open hands.
Seasonal Note
As the equinox arrives, the earth pauses in perfect balance before autumn takes hold in earnest. This threshold invites us to do the same, not to resolve every tension we’re carrying, but to notice it, honor it, and let it be exactly as full and as true as it is.
Closing Invitation
If this reflection speaks to you, I invite you to spend a few quiet moments this week noticing your own balance point, what is in the light, and what is in the shadow. If you are looking for support on your healing journey, you are welcome to book a session with Inner Paths Natural Wellness.
The scale is level, if only for a moment.
Pause. Notice. Hold both.
Your path is unfolding, one mindful step at a time.
